| Activity title | Countermine Technologies of the Future | Activity Reference | SCI-ET-066 | Panel | SCI | Security Classification | Other | Status | Active | Activity type | ET | Start date | 2024-01-30T00:00:00Z | End date | 2025-01-30T00:00:00Z | Keywords | CIED, countermeasures, Countermine, detection, landmines, neutralization, technology assessment, threat evaluation | Background | In the last 15 years the focus in the domain of Military Engineering was mainly on technologies and methods for countering Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), as a result of the abundant presence of this threat in NATO mission areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan. This situation is reflected in the activities under the SCI Panel: in 2008 the first SCI TG dedicated to C-IED was started (SCI-193 ‘Detection and Neutralization of Route Threats’), while the last activity on countermine technologies, SCI-133, ended in 2007.
| Objectives | In the ET, the reports delivered by the SCI-046 and SCI-133 Task Group, ’Countermining Technologies’ (August 2005) and ‘Countermine Technologies’ (June 2007), respectively, will be reviewed and assessed on their relevance in the current and foreseen military operations. On the basis of these reports gaps in countermine capabilities will be identified, and existing and emerging C-IED technologies will be considered for filling these gaps.
| Topics | The ET and follow-up TG will include all applicable technologies for countering conventional and advanced landmines, i.e. technologies for detection, identification, neutralization and decoying. Systems based on these technologies may be mounted on all conceivable platforms, from manned and unmanned ground vehicles, to UAVs and satellites.
